Corporate Policy in the Water Sector
Specialist seminar
On Febuary 7th 2007, the seminar “Corporate Policy in the Water Sector” took place in the Technopol congress centre in Bratislava. The seminar was organised as part of the project “Specialist assistance for Slovak regional water companies” (OPSRVS), financed by resources from ISPA/KF FM č. 202/SK/16/P/PA/008. The aim of the project is technical and specialist assistance for water companies in the process of increasing the level of services provided by them.
The seminar dealt with strategic goals and urgent key problems in the water industry. The purpose was not only to provide information on the water sector, but also to give interested parties the space to present their opinion on topical questions.
The subjects under discussion were focused on the legal framework of the SR for ensuring development investment activities in the water industry and the provision of water services. Participants were presented with the state and trends in the treatment and supply of drinking water and the removal and cleaning of waste water, an analysis of the standards of quality of water services, and the problems with company management. The seminar once more confirmed that the most serious, and even existentially important subjects for entities in the water sector are questions on the creation of resources for ensuring the operation, simple reproduction and development of the water infrastructure in relation to the change of conditions in the accessibility of EU resources, as well as the current setting of conditions for water regulation.
The conclusions of the discussion can be summarised as a challenge to make the economic environment in which the water industry must work more effective, to harmonise the way of performing regulation with the regulatory policy and the policy of development of the water economy until 2012, to specialist cooperation of all interested parties with the aim of achieving transparent rules to ensure the proper, rational use of water resources.
